GSD means Ground Sample Distance (sometimes written “Ground Sampling Distance”). It’s the real-world size represented by a single pixel in an image captured by a drone
GSD is important because it’s the simplest way to ensure your imagery will be detailed enough to spot the defect sizes you care about (cracks, erosion, hotspots, cell defects, etc.).
It depends on the smallest defect you need to detect and how you’ll review images. As a rule: the smaller the defect, the smaller the GSD you should target. Use the calculator to find out!
